As a kid my family all called me a science geek before it was cool but always encouraged me to experiment, build and fix things. We had no history of people going to university in the family so it made our parents very proud when both my sister and myself went.
Loved working with animals at the RVC but despite publishing some veterinary research papers (difficult to do without a PhD but not impossible) somehow drifted into physics and computing. After doing a physics degree at Warwick and teaching qualification at Wadham, Oxford I worked in large secondary comprehensives until eventually becoming head of Science.
When the oportunity came to create and build the YSC at the Ri I jumped at the chance to develop less formal STEM education and still love it when young people realise that they can do science and are the scientists of the future.
