About Me:
Hi – I’m Michael and I trained as a biologist and taxonomist but now work in science communication. I love exploring how to explore science, and the learning of learning! Which means I get to play with all areas of science!

I live with my husband in London and moved back from Mumbai, India 3 years ago where I worked in local schools and with festivals, in science and photography. I love cycling to work (it’s more enjoyable in the summer!) and being back nearer my family here.
I once drove an auto rickshaw 3300km down west India with two friends which is easily the most dangerous thing I have done!
I really enjoy travelling (difficult these days…), cooking all sorts of food and singing badly with my colleagues in karaoke. I love wandering around the parks near where I live and sometimes run… but my legs aren’t that keen.

My Work:
I help develop and build the demos for the Royal Institution for stage and TV and working alongside some amazing colleagues, we explore science for different audiences.

I started with the Ri nearly 3 years ago and didn’t quite know what I was getting my self into! It’s been a rollercoaster and so much fun so let me tell you what I do…
Every year we do a TV show called the Christmas Lectures with different presenters – hopefully you have heard of them! My job is to help develop what the demos that you see in the show look like and also build them! So we look at the subject and think how best to explore it for the Lecturer.
For the rest of the year I get to build and design, talks and presentations in our amazing building in central London for many different scientists and lecturers who want to tell the public more about their fascinating area of study. We also run Family Fun Days where families can come in and do demos and science with many different people! Plus we run shows in schools to explore all areas of science and our amazing history at the Ri!

My Typical Day:
My day normally involves trying to tidy up the tools and project that I was doing the day before – must get better at this! But I am normally reading and thinking about how to best demonstrate complex ideas and discussing this with my colleagues who have a wealth of knowledge. Then I can start building things – literally! My most useful item is my electric drill..! I can also be found presenting on stage too!
