I work in the biochemical Engineering dept at UCL on processes that use microbes of varying types to make products that range from fuel to medicines. The work is focused on replacing some of the things made from the petroleum industry so that we have more environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Things that are made biologically, can be broken down biologically! There is also a focus on removing wastes and/or turning them in to something with value

My Typical Day:
I start my day at work a little late, after doing some exercise. It will usually start with a meeting about ways to make the university a nicer place for everyone. Then i will spend the rest of the day, trying to solve problems, helping students with their work or teaching them new things. Then at the end of the day I will do some more exercise, maybe some yoga or a little running.

I am generally working or talking about my work to others, all day! Trying to make the university a nicer place for everyone, usually involves just talking to different types of people to find out if they don’t like anything about the university and then trying to fix it. Solving new problems is part of the research process, and that could be me looking for new areas to research or apply the things i know to, or helping students to do the same. Most days there will be some teaching, every day there is some exercise!
I try to exercise frequently to keep the work/life balance and exercise of different forms is good for the mind, body and soul!

What I'd do with the prize money:
Try to increase the diversity of people who want to become academics
-
What I do to help Planet Earth:
Recycling, Cycling to work (not everyday though!), Cut down meat eating (not every day or every meal), Use a renewable energy supplier for home energy.
-
The CHRISTMAS LECTURE related to my work:
Part of my work focuses on sustainability, so reducing fossil fuel use and other non-sustainable things. Making biofuel, reusing waste and converting it to other useful things, so it doesnt go to landfill. Using the power of micro-organisms to break things down or convert them to other things.
