Work History:
My first job having graduated was as a Surveyor with the British Antarctic Survey where I spent the next 2 1/2 years.
I spent the next 2 years working in South America. Argentina, Uruguay and Peru.
Having returned to the UK in 1977 I then worked on large construction projects such as road by-passes, motorways and a nuclear power station/recycling plant for 7 years.
I then went to work in Algeria for the Algerian Military, where I was a surveyor building military fortifications.
Returned to the UK where I completed a teacher training course for 1 year. Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Manchester University)
On completion of this course I got my first teaching job at Wigan College of Technology before becoming a lecturer at University of Central Lancashire.

Before any construction project starts, there is often just a large area of land. Part of my job was to mark out, or ‘Set Out’ exactly where all of the buildings, roads and drains, pavements etc were going to go. This was so the excavators could dig for foundations etc. This is a very responsible job because if I made a mistake then the building, road, motorway, airport or housing estate would be built in the wrong place.
In the Antarctic, I was mapping out parts of the Antarctic as well as using geophysical techniques to map out the shape of the Antarctic beneath a mile thick glacier.
I later went in to teaching and as well as teaching at English colleges and Universities I also taught at Ovideus University in Constantia, Romania.

My Typical Day:
I always like to be up early for work, whether I’m working on a construction site or teaching. This is because I always like to be well prepared for whatever I do and I often have to travel long distances. If I’m surveying then I spend most of my day outside so I’m dressed for our changeable weather.

Using surveying equipment (theodolites and other optical equipment) means using natural daylight so I would be on-site during the day but in the office when light was poor doing calculations in preparation for working on-site.
As a lecturer I would be giving lessons, lectures, tutorials, setting and marking coursework, exams etc.
