Great question!
When the UK talks about reducing its carbon emissions, they are generally the carbon emissions produced within our borders (heating, energy, vehicles etc) and this accounts for about 54% of our total carbon emissions (https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/wp-content/uploads/sites/1/files/2020-04/FINAL-WWF-UK_Carbon_Footprint_Analysis_Report_March_2020%20(003).pdf). What we don’t usually mention is the other 46% of the UK’s emissions which come from importing goods from other countries. Goods that are made mostly using fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas and then transported by air of ship to the UK. So whilst we can pat ourselves on the back for having lots of renewable energy in the UK, we all need to go much further and also think about the total carbon footprint.
