Oh, tough question!
Unfortunately I cannot come up with one answer:
– getting first research grant
– getting my permanent researcher position
– seeing first PhD student graduate and move to a cool job
– getting the contract for my professor position
Agree – this is a tricky one to answer! Maybe I’ll pick two:
– seeing something I’ve researched being used in the real world in a piece of technology
– when one of my PhD students passes their “viva” (to pass your PhD you have to do a tough oral exam called a “viva” where two examiners question you for hours about what’s in your thesis!)
Hard to tell, I’d say it was my very first publication. In retrospect, later publications may have been better but by that time I had just finished my Master’s degree and it was kind of my first widely visible step into the academic world.
Great question that really made me think. I think my proudest moments have all come when my students have made new discoveries, got good jobs or just done well.
Tough question! Probably in order:
– my PhD students developing into independent scientists and graduating
– winning a big European research grant
– leading a successful research voyage for 7 weeks off Africa
