Teachers: help get parents and caregivers involved

Open Chats: students can chat from home with their family

Throughout the Planet Earth Zone, we’re running some Open Chats. Families can sign up to take part, without a teacher needing to book a Chat for them.

Open Chats are an opportunity for students to involve parents and carers. They’re really popular, with students keen to introduce their families and friends to the scientists they have been connecting with as a class.

When?
We are running the following Open Chats:

  • For Primary School students: every weekday, 2pm to 3pm
  • For all ages: Thursday evenings, 7pm to 8pm (14, 21, 28 January and 4 February)

Print Primary Schools Chat Handout (8 to a page)

Print Thursday Evening Chat Handout (8 to a page)

How to get students involved

Set an Open Chat as homework
This is the best way to get your students online. Suggest they log in with a family member, look at the profiles together, and ask a question in the Chat. They just log in as normal on the Planet Earth Zone and click the Chat button at the top of the page.
Add information to your school newsletter
Suggested wording to send home:

Some of our students will be chatting online with scientists, on the I’m a Scientist website. We are encouraging pupils to show their parents and carers the site and introduce them to the scientists in an Open Chat. Parents and carers can meet the scientists and ask them about what it’s like working in science. For Primary School pupils, there is an Open Chat every weekday, from 2pm to 3pm (11 January to 5 February). There is also an Open Chat for all ages on Thursday evenings, from 7pm to 8pm (14, 21, 28 January and 4 February). If your child has registered, they can use their log in details to attend. Or, when its time for the Open Chat, you can log in using one of your online accounts (such as Facebook, Google, Twitter or Microsoft). Head to /planetearth-zone/, log in and click Chat to take part.

Or email/post this letter with further details.
