The favourite thing about my job is getting to travel – either to visit other university laboratories where I can do experiments on volcanic ash, to attend conferences to discuss research with other scientists, or to collect samples in volcanic landscapes. I feel very lucky to have visited interesting places and met with great people around the world! 🙂
I like that everyday is different. If I did my favourite thing all day, then I would get bored of it! Some times I’m in meetings, others in the lab, others at my computer. Some times I’m presenting ideas or teaching my colleagues about something I have learnt.
It used to be travelling to meet colleagues all over the world, but that’s on hold and will remain so for 2021.
Aside from that it is helping other scientists develop into independent, mature scientists who can go out into the world and do cool things
My favourite thing is the exchange with colleagues and the interesting discussions and ideas evolving from. I essentially learn something new every time I talk about science with them.

Watching the PhD researchers mature and grow into independent scientists who then go on to make their own pathway. That’s the point of my job
